As one of the most photographed sites in Harwich, picturesque Wychmere Harbor in Harwich Port, is home to a small number of commercial fishing vessels as well as the elegant Wychmere Beach Club.  The Harbor takes its name from a group of business tycoons in the 1920s -- the "Wychmere Syndicate" --  who purchased most of the surrounding shore land on South Harwich and were looking for a more upscale name to use in their real estate advertising.   They renamed the body of  water known to locals as "Salt Pond" to "Wychmere Harbor" which takes its name from the British "wich" given to places where salt can be found and "mere" from the Scottish name for lake.  A prominent local family who lived next to what was then the Town Dock off Snow Inn Road, donated much of the land at Harbor Road on Wychmere Harbor as a permanent landing for commercial fishermen.  Read more about Wychmere Harbor real estate.
