More About West Somerville Real Estate

 West Somerville Location

West Somerville borders Lexington Avenue and the Ball Square neighborhood to the north and northeast; the Spring Hill neighborhood to the east; Porter Square to the south; and the city of Cambridge to the east. The Davis Square intersection marks the meeting point of several streets, including Holland Street, Dover Street, Elm Street, Day Street, and Highland and College Avenues. The Davis Square MBTA Station on the Red Line serves the neighborhood and connects to several MBTA buses going into Cambridge and other adjoining towns.

West Somerville History

West Somerville includes much of the original land on which the Tufts University was founded although today Tufts is officially located in nearby Medford. Somerville overall blossomed during the Industrial Revolution, welcoming many immigrants from Ireland, Italy, and Portugal. The area declined after WWII, but surged in popularity once neighboring Cambridge abolished rent control. The extension of the Red Line into Davis Square further transformed the neighborhood. New residents helped create a thriving community known for its ethnic restaurants and quirky charm as well as its explosive real estate market.
