Wellfleet Real Estate

Wellfleet is world famous for its briny and succulent oysters – the focus of the Wellfleet OysterFest held every October.  The name “Wellfleet” is variously thought to come from a brand of oyster popular in England in the late 1700s or from “Whale Fleet” after the whaling industry that drove the early economy.  Today bustling Wellfleet Harbor is home to sail boats, power boats as well as larger commercial vessels which deliver much of the fresh catch on the menus in local restaurants.  Read more about Wellfleet real estate.

Wellfleet Real Estate Statistics
Wellfleet is a coastal community located halfway between the “tip and elbow” of Cape Cod. At only two miles wide, Wellfleet marks the narrowest part of the Cape. Despite its width, the town is distinguished by pristine beaches on both the bay and Atlantic sides as well as a number of sparkling ponds. Approximately 70% of the land is protected, contributing to Wellfleet’s raw, natural beauty. Walkers and hikers delight in the MA Audubon trails as well as the Great Island hike.

Wellfleet Community Summary

With the second largest concentration of art galleries on the Cape (Provincetown is the first), the Outer Cape town of Wellfleet boasts a thriving arts community.  The Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theatre features live plays and performances while the Wellfleet Preservation Hall hosts cultural events year-round.  Residents and vacationers enjoy live bands at the Beachcomber on Cahoon Hollow Beach while families can catch a movie at one of America’s last drive-in movie theaters.

Marconi’s Wireless Experiments Extended Across the Cape

His name evokes strong ties to Wellfleet, but it seems Guglielmo Marconi’s inventions actually extended across the Cape. The man responsible for the first transatlantic wireless communication between the US and Britain first began experimenting in the late 1800s in England. He then took his experiments to Cape Cod, and successfully carried out the transmissions from the Marconi Wireless Station Site around the turn of the century. Cape Cod was, of course, chosen for its extreme easter... Read More

The Wellfleet Resort You Can’t Stay At

There are a lot of great places to stay on Cape Cod, but there’s one legendary resort in Wellfleet you can’t stay at or even see. That’s because the resort is mostly just memories these days. The old Chequesset Inn was once one of the grandest resorts on the Outer Cape. A wealthy fruit company owner built the hotel on Mercantile Wharf in the 1880s. It’s said the inn was designed to look like an ocean liner with cabins. Known as the “Hotel Over the Sea”, the four-story resort helped ... Read More

Billingsgate - The Lost Island of Wellfleet

Sometimes referred to as “The Lost Island” of Wellfleet, Billingsgate may not be as well-known today as some other Cape Cod islands, but it certainly still retains a prominent spot in Cape Cod history. Located about 2.5-miles off the shore of Wellfleet, it’s thought Billingsgate Island originally got its name from the Billingsgate Fish Market in London. At 60-acres in size, the island was once a prime spot for fishing. While it wasn’t very large itself, the island grew in population d... Read More

Lt’s Island in Wellfleet -- A Walk on the Wild Side

More isolated than some other parts of the Cape, Lieutenant’s Island in Wellfleet is the kind of place that drives you to take a walk on the wild site. The isolated island is a bit more secluded, but nevertheless offers a unique place to visit and explore. Named after a 17th-century Wampanoag who held the first deed to the island, the Pilgrims once used the marshes for horses and cows. By the late 1800s, developers took notice, and began building vacation homes on the island. Very f... Read More

Scared of Sharks, Try a Kettle Pond

Each summer people flock to Cape Cod, but there’s an option for getting in the water that doesn’t include dipping your toes in the ocean at all. Kettle ponds are one of the Cape’s true treasures, and you’ll never have to worry about even remotely coming close to a shark. Around 20 of these freshwater ponds are scatted throughout Wellfleet and Truro. While some are hard to find and difficult to reach, others are great for a day out in the sun. Made famous in recent years by travel wr... Read More
