Tinkertown

Tinkertown is a historic neighborhood in coastal Duxbury originally settled in 1757 as the Pilgrim settlers moved north from Plymouth to create homesteads for new neighborhoods defined by their trades. Tinkertown draws its name from the workspaces on Elm Street where various “tinkers” offered their wares.

Jeremiah Dillingham was reputed to be the first tinker, helping to establish a flourishing shoe industry. In the 1900s, cranberry farms evolved into a thriving business, covering more than a hundred acres with the bogs still in existence and generating harvests up until the present day.

Tinkertown is largely residential with more than 100 single-family homes sprinkled across Elm, Oak, and School Streets. Homes are a mix of historic and newer properties, including Colonials, American Craftsman-style and sprawling contemporary compounds. The family-friendly community boasts excellent schools as well as a tight-knit neighborhood association. Residents enjoy biking or walking portions of the Bayside Trail that runs through the neighborhood. Tinkertown is conveniently located close to Route 3 for easy access to Boston as well as other South Shore neighborhoods.
