The Gurnet

The Gurnet, or Gurnet’s Point is a private residential community located at the southern end of Duxbury Beach with access restricted to those who live in the community. The Pilgrims first named the area “Gurnett’s Nose” for its resemblance to waters in the English Channel where Gurnett fish were especially abundant. The Gurnet also houses Plymouth (Gurnet) Lighthouse as well as Fort Andrew, a structure dating back to Revolutionary War times.

The small community is known for a mix of waterfront homes ranging from spectacular oceanfront properties to more modest beach cottages to stately colonials, all sitting along the ocean’s edge. Select homes come with deeded rights to private areas of Duxbury Beach. Residents tout the area as having all the amenities and beauty of Cape Cod without the traffic.

In fact, access to The Gurnet is only from Gurnet Road or from the Powder Point Bridge at Duxbury Beach from the north. Beach buggies or 4-wheel drive or a scenic stroll on foot are the best way to access the community which is restricted to property owners and their guests. Once a year, on Memorial Day, the lighthouse is open to the public.

Despite the secluded setting, the community is still convenient to Duxbury schools and shopping and dining as well as a short walk to Boston bus lines.
