Spring Hill History
Spring Hill is a drumlin — or a hill composed of material deposited from glacial activity. Boston and surrounding areas have many such drumlin landmarks. Largely agrarian, the Spring Hill area wasn’t fully developed until the 1840s. The neighborhood is now home to Somerville Hospital which opened in 1891 and was also the neighborhood haunt of the notorious Winter Hill gang leader, Howie Winter.
