More About Seaport District Real Estate

 Seaport District Location

The Seaport District is bordered by Boston Harbor to the north and east, South Boston to the south; and the Fort Point Channel to the west. The area is sometimes referred to as the “South Boston Waterfront.” Seaport is served by the MBTA Silver Line Waterfront which originates at South Station in the nearby Financial District. The Evelyn Moakley Bridge connects Seaport to Downtown Boston while the Boston Harborwalk runs through the neighborhood. Connectors to the Ted Williams Tunnel, I-90 E/W and I-93 N/S provide access by car to the central roadways to points west, north, and south.

Seaport District History

Over the past 150 years, the Seaport has transformed from a muddy spot covered by water in Boston Harbor to a thriving shipping area in the early part of the 20th century for the textile factories located there. In the mid-1990s, the area consisted of largely abandoned warehouses and parking lots. Artists and other creatives were the first to “rediscover” the neighborhood. It was Mayor Tom Menino, however, who made the development of Seaport a priority, pushing for the Boston Convention Center and the ICA to build there. Before his death, Menino christened the area the “Innovation District” and encouraged Boston’s tech elite to create a tech hub there. Today, Seaport is one of Boston’s hottest neighborhoods with development continuing on a number of new mixed-use towers.
