Scituate History
Scituate was settled by Plymouth residents in 1627. The town draws its name from “Satuit” or the Wampanoag term for cold brook which references the brook that runs to the inner harbor of the town. Fishing made up a significant part of the Scituate economy in the 1700s and 1800s. Today the town still maintains a small working fishing fleet from its Town Pier to supply many of the commercial restaurants in town and along the South Shore. Lighthouses also play an important role in Scituate’s history.
One of the town’s most colorful stories surrounds a lighthouse on the northern edge of Scituate Harbor now known as Old Scituate Light. During the War of 1812, two daughters of the lighthouse keeper were able to successfully fend off a British naval raiding party by playing a fife and drum loudly. The British apparently had no idea the loud music came from just two young women and the incident became known as the “American Army of of Two” or “Lighthouse Army of Two.”
Two early ancestors of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln hailed from Scituate as did the first president of Harvard University, Henry Dunster.
