More About Salisbury

 Salisbury Location

Situated on the New Hampshire border, Salisbury is the northernmost town in Massachusetts. The town houses the Salisbury Beach State Reservation, a park which includes the entire seacoast as well as small islands and marshes. Salisbury is bordered by Seabrook New Hampshire to the north; the Merrimack River and Newburyport to the south; the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Amesbury to the west.

Interstate 95 terminates in Salisbury providing access to Route 1 and Massachusetts/New Hampshire Route 286 which runs along the beaches. The nearest MBTA train station taking commuters to Boston’s North Station is in Newburyport.

Salisbury Recreation

The Salisbury Beach State Reservation features 3.8 miles of beach along the Atlantic Ocean with swimming, boating, fishing, camping and wildlife viewing. Facilities include a large parking lot, bathrooms, and boardwalks that take residents and visitors over the dunes. The reservation also houses two boat ramps located on the Merrimack River, ideal for boating enthusiasts. Off-season, residents can walk along the wind-swept shore and catch horseback riders on an early morning ride. Salisbury’s Coastal Trails are another option, offering close to five miles of scenic trails for biking, walking and bird watching.

Salisbury History

Salisbury was settled by the English in 1638 and incorporated in 1640. The town still retains something of its original shape from the 1600s when the roads where designed to allow residents to quickly get to the garrison house in case of attack. Much of Salisbury’s history is as a summer resort lined with hotels, shops and amusement parks. Beach Road, constructed in 1866 across the Great Marsh, spurred this development by providing easy access to the town’s beach. The Sky Rocket, the beach’s first roller coaster, made its debut in Salisbury. Salisbury also evolved into a popular venue for concerts, hosting Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller, and Liberace among others. The last amusement park closed in 2004 to make way for new waterfront condos.
