Powder House Square Real Estate

Powder House Square is a historic neighborhood and landmark rotary located in Somerville along the southern edge of Tufts University. Locals refer to the area as “Powder House Circle,” which draws its name from the 18th century Powder House that still stands today and overlooks the rotary from the park. Close to Davis Square, Teele Square, and Ball Square, the neighborhood boasts easy access to surrounding areas via the multiple bus routes running through the main thoroughfare. Powder House Square also borders Nathan Tufts Park, which is ideal for a scenic walk, run, or picnic. Residents congregate around the Square at a small cluster of eateries and local businesses. Prospective buyers can choose from a multi-family home ripe for conversion to a grand single-family home — to any number of newly renovated condos.  Read more about Powder House Square real estate.

Powder House Square History

Powder House Square is located at one of the oldest crossroads in the area and houses the oldest stone building in Massachusetts. Removal of the colonial gunpowder stored there by British solders and the outburst by the Colonists known as Powder Alarm, are considered to be the turning points that led up to the Revolutionary War. Today the Powder House is tucked away in the graceful lines of Nathan Tufts Park. Its image is pictured on the Somerville city seal and bronze plaques around the park summarize the area’s past use as a mill, a farm, storage for gunpowder, and even a pickle factory.
