Ocean Bluff is a coastal neighborhood in the Ocean Bluff-Brant rock area of Marshfield that is rich in history. Known as Governor’s Island, the Ocean Bluff area was first granted to the governor of the Pilgrims and later known as “Winter’s Island” and “Hewitt’s Island” or “Hewitt’s Point. The main road through the area known as “Ocean Street” is a Native American road, dating from the area’s earliest inhabitants — the Wampanoag tribe. Up until the time of the Civil War, Hewitt’s Island and Branch’s Island (Brant Rock) were sometimes referred to as the “Spectacle Islands” as viewed together, the islands resembled a pair of eyeglasses.
Together with Ocean Bluff, Brant Rock comprises five public beaches including Sunrise Beach, Ocean Bluff Beach, Brant Rock Beach, Blackman’s Point, and Bluefish Cove. Sunrise Beach and Ocean Bluff are particularly popular in the summer for surfing and skim boarding because of the waves.
