Midtown Real Estate

Historically, a pedestrian shopping district, Midtown sits at the intersection of Washington, Summer, and Winter Streets. True to its name, Midtown features large department stores as well as restaurants, general retail shops and a mix of street vendors. The addition of Millennium Tower, a soaring glass structure with 442 residences and arrival of a supermarket have all helped to transform the area into a desirable place to live. The transition began when Emerson College began building housing off Washington Street. Since then development has accelerated with a new development at Winthrop Square slated for 2020. Much of the neighborhood’s appeal lies in its close proximity to the Financial District, Government Center, and Copley Square.  Read more about Midtown real estate.

More About Midtown Real Estate

Midtown Location

Midtown is located north of Chinatown; south of Government Center; east of Boston Common; and west of the Financial District. The Downtown Crossing MBTA Station lies in the center of the district. The State Street and Park Street stations are also easily walkable with Silver Line service available as well.

Midtown History

Midtown was formerly known as Downtown Crossing. It was first unveiled in 1979 in response to the success of Faneuil Hall Marketplace. A cart vending program helped spur its popularity. The area draws its name from the two department stores, Jordan Marsh, and Filene’s, which used to face each other at the intersection of Washington Street with Winter and Summer Streets. Both stores no longer exist but the district within this intersection is closed to most vehicular traffic, making it easy for pedestrians to walk around and shop.

Many Bostonians have fond memories of visiting the Enchanted Village display at Jordan Marsh during the holiday season. The centerpiece of the village was watching a mesmerizing electric train followed-up by a visit with Santa.
