Maverick Square

Named for one of the state’s earliest settlers, Reverend Samuel Maverick, Maverick Square is a thriving community located in East Boston. As East Boston’s oldest commercial center, Maverick Square traces its roots back to Noddle’s Island which was historically one of the Boston Harbor Islands. The area now comprises the southern part of East Boston. Reverend Maverick became the owner of the island in the early 1600s, living in a fortified mansion until his death. In the 1840s and 1850s, East Boston evolved into a ship-building center, producing 170 of the finest and fastest vessels ever constructed during that era. The shipbuilding industry and extensive port facilities shaped the island, making way for Logan Airport as well as the 20th century subway and vehicular tunnels.

As a result of a massive revitalization project in 2010, many older high rises were razed, replaced by single-family homes and contemporary new condo buildings. Today residents enjoy the East Boston miles of shoreline as well as waterfront parks, distinctive restaurants, and stunning views of the Boston skyline. At the heart of the Square is the Maverick Station MBTA stop on the Blue line which simplifies getting in and out of Downtown Boston as well as surrounding areas.
