Magoun Square Real Estate

Magoun Square is vibrant neighborhood in Somerville centered on the intersection of Broadway and Medford Streets, two major thoroughfares. Less than five miles from Downtown Boston, Magoun Square offers a plethora of local food options and relatively affordable housing compared to nearby Davis Square. The 2012 opening of Maxwell’s Green, a high-end apartment and townhouse complex built on a former factory site, drew new attention to the area. Working professionals and young families cite the convenient location, abundance of public transportation as well as the Somerville bike path which provides a scenic connection to several surrounding neighborhoods. Residents also enjoy access to multiple parks and open green spaces. Housing stock ranges from new, luxury condos to former multi-family residences that have been renovated and revitalized as condos.  Read more about Magoun Square real estate.

More About Magoun Square Real Estate

 Magoun Square Location

Magoun Square borders Medford and Somerville and is nestled between the neighborhoods of Ball Square and Winter Hill. The recent extension of the Green Line includes two stops serving the community — Magoun and Ball Square while there are a number of MBTA buses running through the square to other parts of Somerville and the Greater Boston area. Magoun Square is also located near Tufts University.

Magoun Square History

Magoun Square draws its name from a former prominent Somerville citizen, John Calvin Magoun, who also married a woman from one of Somerville’s most storied and influential families. Magoun owned a farm between Broadway and Vernon Streets and lived in the Adams-Magoun house, built around 1783. Today, the home is one of the oldest buildings in Somerville and timbers taken from the fort at Winter Hill were repurposed in its construction. Magoun’s wife, Sarah, was a descendant of the Adams family as well as a member of the Tufts family, for which Tufts University and Nathan Tufts Park were named.
