Lieutenant's Island Wellfleet

lt. island wellfleet ma

Off the beaten path, Lieutenant’s Island, located on the Bay side in South Wellfleet, is an undiscovered jewel.  A tidal island that is home to just over 100 properties, Lieutenant’s Island is a sloping hill dotted with summer homes nestled among the dunes and pines of the nearby Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.   Many of the homes overlook Bay side beaches with panoramic views of Jeremy Point and Great Island.  The area is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway and old wooden bridge.  Residents know to keep an eye on the tide charts as particularly high tides cause the road to flood, restricting access on and off the island.

Lieutenant’s Island is supposedly named for a Native American who was the last of the American Indians in the area and took the name of “Lieutenant” seeing the respect the English had for the title.  Today, Lieutenant’s Island is a favorite of hikers and kayakers as well as artists trying to capture the famed “golden light.”
