Jamaica Plain Real Estate

Jamaica Plain or “JP” is a diverse neighborhood known for its green spaces, and vibrant arts and food scene. Occupying 4.4 square miles, the neighborhood is home to working professionals, young families, students and creatives of all ages. Hyde Square is known as Boston’s Latin Quarter and features a number of Latin American eateries as well as indie shops and cozy bars. Jamaica Plain is also one of the greenest neighborhoods in the city of Boston. The community includes a number of the jewels of the Emerald Necklace park system designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Trails meander around Jamaica Pond and through the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, both links in the Emerald Necklace chain of parks. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy JP’s abundant biking and walking paths as well as the natural vistas. Much of the neighborhood’s appeal lies in its bucolic scenery and tight-knit community just a 15 minute car ride from downtown Boston. Properties range from colorful Victorians to sleek, contemporary condos with sweeping views of Boston cityscapes.   Read more about Jamaica Plain real estate.

More About Jamaica Plain Real Estate

 Jamaica Plain Location

Jamaica Plain is conveniently situated to Boston’s public transportation systems. The Orange Line runs through the middle of the city, stopping at four different T stations. The Green Line’s “E” Branch also terminates in the area and Forest Hills is the nearest Commuter Rail station.  Jamaica Plain borders Brookline to its north and northwest; Roslindale to the south; and Roxbury to the east.

Jamaica Plain History

Founded by Boston Puritans looking for farmland, Jamaica Plain was originally part of Roxbury before annexation to Boston in 1874. The name comes from the role of Jamaican cane sugar in the Triangle trade of sugar, rum, and slaves. In the 19th century Jamaica Plain became one of the first streetcar suburbs in the U.S. and was also a country retreat along Jamaica Pond for Boston’s elite families. Historians referred to JP as “the Eden of America” because of its abundance of greenery designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, the father of American landscape architecture. The Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain is the oldest public arboretum in North America.

Today, Jamaica Plain attracts many younger professionals specializing in business, academics and the arts. The trend started in the 1980s when students settled in the neighborhood, drawn to its low rents. They were followed by artists and musicians who all helped reinvent JP as a diverse mix of art centers, galleries, and other communal spaces. Notable past residents include poet Sylvia Plath, New Kids on the Block’s Joey McIntyre and former mayor, James Michael Curley.
