More About Jamaica Plain Real Estate

 Jamaica Plain Location

Jamaica Plain is conveniently situated to Boston’s public transportation systems. The Orange Line runs through the middle of the city, stopping at four different T stations. The Green Line’s “E” Branch also terminates in the area and Forest Hills is the nearest Commuter Rail station.  Jamaica Plain borders Brookline to its north and northwest; Roslindale to the south; and Roxbury to the east.

Jamaica Plain History

Founded by Boston Puritans looking for farmland, Jamaica Plain was originally part of Roxbury before annexation to Boston in 1874. The name comes from the role of Jamaican cane sugar in the Triangle trade of sugar, rum, and slaves. In the 19th century Jamaica Plain became one of the first streetcar suburbs in the U.S. and was also a country retreat along Jamaica Pond for Boston’s elite families. Historians referred to JP as “the Eden of America” because of its abundance of greenery designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, the father of American landscape architecture. The Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain is the oldest public arboretum in North America.

Today, Jamaica Plain attracts many younger professionals specializing in business, academics and the arts. The trend started in the 1980s when students settled in the neighborhood, drawn to its low rents. They were followed by artists and musicians who all helped reinvent JP as a diverse mix of art centers, galleries, and other communal spaces. Notable past residents include poet Sylvia Plath, New Kids on the Block’s Joey McIntyre and former mayor, James Michael Curley.
