Situated 7.9 miles south of Downtown Boston, Hyde Park also borders the cities of Milton and Dedham. The neighborhood is several stops away from Boston’s Back Bay Station on the Commuter Rail with stops at The Fairmount, Hyde Park, and Readville. Hyde Park also offers easy access to the highway for points outside of the city.

Hyde Park History

Hyde Park was established in the 1660s and grew into a hub for paper and cotton manufacturing in the 18th century. The expansion of the railway from Boston in the 1850s accelerated the area’s residential development with Bostonians fleeing the city’s cramped neighborhoods in search of fresh air, natural beauty and more living space. While some remnants of Hyde Park’s early manufacturing days still exist in pockets of industrial areas, Hyde Park has certainly earned its motto as “A Small Town in the City.” Hyde Park and several of its prominent residents can claim distinction as a catalyst for societal change. The neighborhood was once the site of the first all African-American army unit, the 54 Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, made famous by the movie “Glory.” Hyde Park was also home to two prominent abolitionists, the Grimke sisters, as well as Theodore Dwight Weld. Childe Hassam, the artist known for his peaceful Boston scenes, lived in Hyde Park in his early years while former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, never forgot his Hyde Park roots.
