Hull Real Estate

As a narrow peninsula jutting into Massaschusetts Bay, the coastal town of Hull features Greater Boston’s most unique geography. Hull is the southern land point at the entrance to Boston Harbor and is located 20 miles south of Boston by land but just five miles by water. The town comprises approximately 27 square miles, of which 89% is water ensuring that most real estate listings are oceanfront property or within walking distance to the beach.

Hull is that rare South Shore town offering a unique home close to water for $300-400K. While many homes capitalize on Hull’s beach vibe, there are also a number of historic homes in town, including Georgian, Greek Revival, Italianate, and Colonial styles. As the home of a former amusement park that closed in the 80s, Hull is a vacation destination for many although its 10,000 residents enjoy the laid-back lifestyle dominated by sunsets and sweeping ocean views.  Read more about Hull real estate.

More About Hull Real Estate

Hull Location

Hull is bordered by Massachusetts Bay to the north and east; Hingham Bay to the west; and the towns of Cohasset and Hingham to the south. While commuting into the heart of Boston by car can take upwards of forty-five minutes, many residents take a twenty-minute MBTA boat ride from Pemberton Pier, at the tip of Hull, into Boston’s Long Wharf to get to work. Black Rock Beach connecting Hull to Cohasset is the town’s only landed connection to the mainland although two bridges link the town to Hingham. MBTA bus service extends into neighboring Hingham while Nantasket Junction is the closest stop on the Greenbush commuter line.

Hull Recreation

Nantasket beach is at the center of community life in Hull and is part of the Nantasket Beach Reservation. The reservation includes a mile of Atlantic shoreline featuring fine, light sand and is one of the most popular beaches in Greater Boston. At low tide the acres of tide pools are ideal for families with young children who want to explore marine life. Another popular attraction is the Paragon Carousel and Museum which is dedicated to the popular amusement park, Paragon Park, that shut down in the 80s. Kids can still ride on the carousel, which has been renovated from the original. Fort Revere Park is another great venue for panoramic ocean views. The eight-acre historic site and public recreation area features the remains of two seacoast fortifications as well as a water tower and picnic facilities.

Hull History

The Plymouth Colony established a trading post in Hull in 1621 for trade with the Wampanoags and settled the town a year later in 1622. The town was officially incorporated in 1644 with a focus on fishing, trade and salvaging shipwrecks. Lifesaving is an important piece of Hull history. Joshua James, Hull’s most famous lifesaver, is estimated to have saved more than 100 people from shipwrecks with his crew. The Hull Lifesaving Museum is dedicated to many of James’ miraculous rescues and includes the original rescue surfboat “Nantasket” as well as more than 5,000 artifacts from various rescues. A number of New England luminaries from Calvin Coolidge to former Boston mayor, John F. Fitzgerald (Rose Kennedy’s father), have made Hull their summer home.
