Herring River Harwich

Herring River Harwich

The Herring River is a scenic waterway located in West Harwich, MA, and a favorite of kayakers and birding enthusiasts for their frequent glimpses of Ospreys and Black-Crowned Night Herons.  Surrounded by more than 250 acres of conservation land, the river cuts through a series of hiking and biking trails before ending in the herring ladder that connects the river with the West reservoir.  Each April, the river is home to migrating river herring fighting their way upstream from the Cape Cod Bay to spawn in a group of inland ponds.  Paddlers have ample opportunity to view the sometime elusive inhabitants of the marsh as they follow the curves of the tidal river to a freshwater reservoir.
The site of a small number of riverfront estates on Riverside Drive and Skecheconet Road, the Herring River provides a peaceful setting with ever-changing views of the water.  The Herring River is located in the Bells Neck Conversation Lands in West Harwich off Route 28 and south of Route 6.
