Eastham Real Estate

Eastham is rich in history –  the region was known as “Nauset” after the Nauset Indians who were the original settlers there.  First Encounter Beach commemorates the site of the first meeting between the Pilgrims and the Indians; unfortunately, the meeting did not end amicably with each group fleeing amid arrows and musket fire.  Ultimately, a small group of Pilgrims dissatisfied with the land quality in Plymouth settled Eastham in 1644, coexisting peacefully with the Indians.  Descendants of these original Pilgrims continue to live in Eastham today.  Read more about Eastham real estate.

Orleans and Eastham Share History But Offer Different Summer Vibes

They may share a common history, but Orleans and Eastham certainly offer different summer vibes. Originally known as Nauset in the 1600s, the name changed to Eastham by the mid-century mark. At that time, Orleans was simply a part of Eastham, which was sometimes called the South Precinct or the South Parish. It wasn’t until the late 1700s that Orleans became its own town, named after France’s Duke of Orleans. While today both towns have vacation and seasonal rentals, they feel quite... Read More

The Legend of the Three Sisters Cape Lighthouses

Cape Cod is full of history, and much of it is tied to the region’s maritime past. The Three Sisters Lighthouses are, of course, a big part of the region’s esteemed history. These days, the Three Sisters sit far from the ocean, but their story actually began almost 200 years ago. That’s when the Town of Eastham first pushed for a beacon to help protect against shipwrecks. Instead of just one lighthouse, area leaders came up with a plan for three. It’s said they wanted three of them ... Read More

The History of Fort Hill Eastham

For some of the best views overlooking Cape Cod, Fort Hill is a great place for visitors and locals alike. Now part of the National Seashore, the location provides the opportunity to walk through open fields and forests. In a nod to its past, the entire Fort Hill Rural Historic District has a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Fort Hill dates back to the time the Pilgrims first settled in the area in the mid 1600s. Likely used as a way to defend themselves from possib... Read More

How Thumpertown Got Its Name

It’s surely a name you won’t forget, but Thumpertown traces its roots to an entirely spiritual beginning. It’s said the name Thumpertown in North Eastham originated with the old-time revival meetings once held in the area. In the mid 1800s, a 10-acre lot in North Eastham played host to some spirited Methodist revival meetings on the beach. The “thumping” and hollering of those visitors, in turn, lead to the coining of Thumpertown. Some of the largest revivals drew in thousands of pe... Read More
