Dorchester Real Estate

With 126,000 residents spread across six square miles, Dorchester is Boston’s largest and most diverse neighborhood. The area is home to UMass Boston as well as the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, located at Columbia Point. A cultural melting pot with a number of ethnic restaurants, Dorchester boasts a strong sense of community. Favorite spots to live include Ashmont Hill with its abundance of Victorian houses and the leafy Over the Bridge area in Savin Hill. Lower Mills, Ashmont, and Cedar Grove are the more southern regions of the neighborhood and are appealing for their close proximity to the Red Line and newer restaurants and bars that have grown up around the development. Many of the area’s iconic triple-deckers present opportunities for investment properties while contemporary condos at affordable prices are springing up around Washington Street and Upham’s Corner.  Read more about Dorchester real estate.

More About Dorchester Real Estate

 Dorchester Location

Dorchester is located south of downtown Boston and borders the neighborhoods of South Boston, Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Hyde Park, the South End, as well as the city of Quincy and town of Milton. The Neponset River meanders past several parks, and nearby Franklin Park has woodland trails and a zoo.

The neighborhood is well served by train service with five stations on the MBTA Red Line and five stations on the Fairmount Commuter Rail Line. I-93 is easily accessed from Dorchester to points north and further south.

Dorchester History

Dorchester became part of Boston in 1870 but didn’t see population growth until the 1920s when newly installed streetcar lines transformed the area into one of the original “streetcar suburbs.” Immigrants flooded into the area from Ireland, Poland and other countries, attracted by the strong economy and ability to easily work and commute to jobs downtown. Once overwhelmingly Catholic, Dorchester’s many sub-neighborhoods were originally organized by church parish. Today Dorchester is known for its great restaurants, tolerance of different cultures and for the occasional glimpse of a member of the Wahlberg family. who grew up in the neighborhood.
