Central Square Real Estate

Cambridge’s Central Square is a diverse neighborhood known for its array of ethnic eateries, live music venues, bars, and close proximity to the many educational institutions in the area. More upscale restaurants have opened as high-tech and biotech start-ups have moved their offices into the Square to take advantage of nearby MIT. The neighborhood comprises four distinct areas: Cambridgeport; The Port/Area 4; Riverside; and Mid-Cambridge, providing a melting pot for a diverse group of residents ranging from students and young families to hipsters, and wealthy entrepreneurs. Mid-Cambridge is particularly popular with buyers because of its easy access to Harvard and Central Square. Richard B. Modica Way, aka “Graffiti Alley” is often described as the hallmark of Central Square although the area continues to transform with gentrification. The real east stock includes new construction and luxury lofts as well as properties requiring varying levels of renovation.  Read more about Central Square real estate.

More About Central Square Real Estate

 Central Square Location

Central Square is the nexus of several neighborhoods — Cambridgeport is on the south side between Massachusetts Avenue and the Charles River; Mid-Cambridge lies to the northwest and west of Central Square; while Area 4 is to the east on the north side of Massachusetts Avenue. The Square is centered on the junction of Massachusetts Avenue; Prospect Street and Western Avenue. The neighborhood is served by the MBTA Central Square Stop on the Red Line and includes a number of buses traversing the area.

Central Square History

Similar to other Cambridge neighborhoods, Central Square has enjoyed several waves of immigration, including Irish, Europeans, and more recently, people from the West Indies, South America and Africa. In addition to serving as the seat of government for the City of Cambridge, Central Square was also home to the Necco candy factory from 1927 to 2003, manufacturing Necco wafers and Haviland mints. Central Square claims a number of famous residents, including actors Ben Affleck and Matt Damon; Patrick Ewing, former Hall of Fame basketball player; and John Forbes Nash, mathematician.
