Bourne Real Estate

Bourne is a quiet town located on the Upper Cape, characterized by the Cape Cod Canal which splits the town in two across the northern end. Home to the Bourne and Sagamore Bridges, Bourne experiences less of the summer rush than other areas of the Cape.   The community bordered by Sandwich to the east, Falmouth to the south, Plymouth to the north and Marion and Wareham to the west.

Bourne is termed the Cape’s “first town,” as it is typically the first town residents and visitors pass through when entering Cape Cod.  The town is credited as the site of the nation’s oldest store, the Aptucxet Trading Post, founded by the Pilgrims in 1627. The location later evolved to form the Cape Cod Canal, architected to save ships the time and danger of sailing around the hazardous eastern shores of the Cape.  Read more about Bourne real estate.

More About Bourne Real Estate

Much of Bourne’s geography was formed around its location on Buzzards Bay and the Canal. The are a number of small “necks” and islands along the shore which have created small coves and harbors. Most of the ponds and rivers all feed into Buzzards Bay. While Bourne includes desirable waterfront properties that serve as second homes and family retreats, many residents live in Bourne year-round in the antique farmhouses and Cape-styles that dominate the area.

Villages located within the town of Bourne include: Bourndale, Bourne Village, Buzzard's Bay, Cataumet, Monument Beach, Pocasset and Sagamore. A significant portion Bourne is home to the Otis Air National Guard Base.

Is Commuter Rail Service Coming to Cape?

Photo: matthrono Commuter rail service may be headed to the Cape. Local officials launched a study last fall to look at connecting up Buzzards Bay to Boston with year-round, commuter rail service. Currently, rail service ends in Lakeville/Middleboro. The proposal would involve extending it all the way to Buzzards Bay in the future. An advisory group has been studying different options for expanding train service to Cape Cod. It’s not a new idea. Town officials have been trying to ... Read More

Bourne is the very first town you come to when passing over the Sagamore Bridge, Bourne Bridge or the railroad bridge, but it actually used to be a part of Sandwich. That’s the second town you come to when traveli... Read More

Mashnee Island: Waterfront Paradise in Buzzards Bay

Nearly surrounded by water, Mashnee Island is, quite simply, waterfront paradise in Buzzards Bay. This small community may not be widely known, but for some that’s definitely part of its appeal. Home to around 140 houses, Mashnee Island offers some incredible views and plenty of history. While residents are able to drive across a one-mile causeway to reach their homes today, in the old days it often meant taking a boat. That’s because at one time, Mashnee was an actual island. The History of the Cape Cod Canal

While visitors to Cape Cod may take the Cape Cod Canal for granted these days, the man-made channel has served an important role in the region for generations. Thousands of people cross over one of the canal’s three bridges every year, likely not even thinking about its origins. Officially connecting up Cape Cod Bay to Buzzards Bay, the canal, for some, was a long time coming. While officially dating back to the early 1900s, the Cape Cod Canal was actually planned out hundreds of year... Read More
