Why the Cape is Ideal for Celebrating Thanksgiving
The Pilgrims first landed on Cape Cod, so it only stands to reason that the Cape is an ideal place to celebrate Thanksgiving. From an annual lighting ceremony to a dinner train, there’s plenty to experience this upcoming holiday season.
While it used to be standard to close up business after Labor Day, that’s hardly the case for a number of Cape Cod venues these days. The region now sees an influx of visitors during less traditional seasons, including Thanksgiving, Christmas and even New Year’s Eve.
One popular location to book your stay is Chatham Gables Inn. The bed and breakfast is extremely popular for those in search of an oceanfront venue with plenty of appeal.
Another unique tradition you may want to check out is the annual Thanksgiving Dinner Train. This three-hour train ride is sure to provide plenty of fun, complete with a five-course meal and some beautiful scenery along the way.
Of course, as long as you’re on the Cape for Thanksgiving you won’t want to miss out on the annual lighting of Pilgrim Monument. Held at the site of the pilgrims’ first landing spot in Provincetown, the lighting ceremony is easily one of Cape Cod’s best traditions. The free lighting ceremony occurs the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving.
While you’re in the area, don’t miss out on getting a head start on your holiday shopping. You’ll find plenty of specialty shops to treat everyone on your list. Late November also kicks off some other annual traditions on the Cape.
Take time to go on a tour of the Sandwich Glass Museum during the 10th Annual Glassblowers’ Christmas. The day after Thanksgiving also marks the beginning of the Cape Cod Christmas Train, and the last weekend of the month kicks off Gardens Aglow at Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich.
