Wellfleet and Provincetown Named Top Beach Towns

If you’re searching for a great beach town, you may want to start and end your search on Cape Cod. Both Wellfleet and Provincetown just received top honors in terms of “The 20 Greatest Beach Towns in the U.S.”.

The designation comes from Thrillist.com. The media website covers everything from travel to entertainment, and recently used its travel writers to come up with a list of what they consider the “best of the best”.

While beach towns from Florida to California, Hawaii to Puerto Rico were considered, the writers declared Wellfleet and Provincetown collectively as among the very best. In fact, writers liked them so much, they lumped the two nearby towns together to take one of the top 20 spots.

The Thrillist website makes mention of the Cape’s nearly 80 miles of sandy shoreline and its charming towns, including, of course Wellfleet. Found on the Outer Cape, the website describes the warm water of Duck Harbor Beach on the bayside.

It’s a popular spot to catch a sunset in Wellfleet. The website also gives credit to Marconi Beach, which is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore.

Marconi Beach is one of a half-dozen beaches located in the National Seashore. Two more are in nearby Provincetown, including Herring Cove Beach, where you can sometimes spot whales out in the water. There’s also Race Point Beach.

Provincetown, of course, sits at the very tip of Cape Cod. Thrillist credits the town’s LGBTQ friendliness, as well as its downtown shops and galleries and the opportunity to pick up a tasty lobster roll or some fried clams.

Thrillist mentions Mayo Beach is a great place to catch a sunset or do some swimming. If you want some outdoor recreation, Thrillist recommends hopping on the Cape Cod Rail Trail. You can pick it up in South Wellfleet, and it runs for 27 miles to Yarmouth.
