With plenty of room to live, work and play, the Seaport District has it all. This hot Boston neighborhood continues to attract developers and interest from those who want to experience all that it has to offer.

Once mostly an industrial area, this booming part of Boston is now filled with hotels, museums, shops and restaurants. Over the past several years, the Seaport District has also gained renewed interest from those looking for an exciting place to call home.

It was only about a decade ago that the mayor declared the Seaport District an “Innovation District”. The idea was to develop the South Boston Waterfront in a unique way.

They may sound like the same place, especially to out-of-towners, but Southie and the South End are definitely not the same. These two Boston neighborhoods are regularly confused, but their similarities virtually start and finish with the word “south”.

Southie/South Boston

Known by locals simply as Southie, South Boston is a large neighborhood located to the south and east of downtown. This blue-collar neighborhood is further divided into a number of sub-neighborhoods like City Point, West Broadway, Telegraph Hill, Fort Point and the Seaport District.

The northern side of the neighborhood has traditionally been more industrial, so that’s where you’ll find some newer development and some converted factories. In recent years the

A popular place to take a stroll or hit the beach, Southie’s Castle Island continues to attract visitors centuries after its beginning. While connected by a roadway today, and technically no longer an island, the story of Castle Island is one that dates back generations.

In fact, its story goes back at least to the 1600s. That’s when it was used primarily by the military to help defend the City of Boston. The very first fort on the island went up during this time period.

During the early 1700s, a fort on the island became known as Castle William. It played a part during events like the Boston Tea Party. By the next century, a new fort went up on the island and was called Fort Independence.
