bass river - cape cod real estate

Officially the town line between Yarmouth and Dennis, the Bass River is equally important to both communities. A popular spot for boating and fishing in central Cape Cod, the river provides plenty of fun for locals and visitors alike, from waterskiing and kayaking, to fishing and fun along the shore.

As the largest river on Cape Cod, the Bass River virtually divides the Cape in half, running from the areas of Follins and Mill ponds in the north to Nantucket Sound in the south. A center island called Marsh Island separates the river into Old Field Channel, which flows towards West Dennis, and the main channel, which passes by Windmill Beach, Ship Shops Marina, Bass River Yacht Club and Bass River Marina.

The river remains especially popular with

wrinkle point - west dennis ma

With enticing views of the Bass River and Nantucket Sound, the West Dennis community of Wrinkle Point still remains a delightful location, years after its humble beginnings. The quirky name is said to originate from the “wrinkles”, or rather winkles that were once so plentiful that locals cooked up and dined on the tiny, edible snails right from the shore.

Now decades later, the private community is home to a clubhouse overlooking the river, a swimming pool and two private beaches. You’ll also find a marina with the benefit of direct boating access to Nantucket Sound.

Some homes in the community even have their own private boat docks right on the Bass River. In addition, you’ll also find some small boats for community members to use.

fingers of west dennis

Designed with a boating lifestyle in mind, the Fingers of West Dennis is one of the premiere neighborhoods of Cape Cod.  The homes are uniquely constructed around eight parallel and man-made canals in West Dennis.  Not far from the mouth of the Bass River, these Weir Creek homes are located just to the north of West Dennis Beach, bordered by Surfside Road and Merchant Avenue.

Because a majority of the properties include a deep-water dock in their private backyards, this is truly a boating community.  While many of the properties are priced around the one million dollar mark, this exclusive neighborhood is also a prime location for getting around the West Dennis area.  The homes are not far by boat to the open waters of Nantucket Sound or to the nearby

A staple since the 1850s, the Bass River Lighthouse still stands as a welcoming beacon to Cape Cod and the surrounding area.  Originally constructed on top of a keeper’s house in 1855, Bass River Light flashed white light on a six second basis, with a 12 mile range, at the mouth of the Bass River.  This helped lead fishing boats safely through the waterways for six decades.  At this time, the Bass River played an important role for ships and schooners in Nantucket Sound.

Eventually, though, the light shut down.  It was re-activated a year later, then finally shut down in 1914 due to reduction of ship traffic because of the Cape Cod Canal.  At some point, Bass River Light also changed its name to West Dennis Light.

Most of the old-time lighthouses were

bass river - dennis ma

If you want to hit the water in Cape Cod, there’s plenty of opportunity to do it.  One of the favorites for both boaters and kayakers is heading out along the Bass River.  You’ll find an eleven mile stretch of river, flowing between Dennis and Yarmouth before meeting up with Nantucket Sound.
The mouth of the river is near West Dennis Beach, a popular place for kite boarding.  Here, you’ll also find a large bay called Marsh Island in the middle of the river.  The island splits the Bass River into two.  On the right, Old Field Channel heads towards West Dennis and The Fingers.  The left side passes by Bass River Yacht Club, Windmill Beach, Ship Shops Marina, as well as the Bass River Marina and Yacht Club.  After this, the river flows under the Route 28
