Osterville-- Mid Cape Upscale Living
Described by some as an upscale Mid Cape village, Osterville is a fantastic place to live and visit. Ocean views, waterfront homes and a quaint downtown all come together to make this such a desirable location.
Whether you spend your afternoons out on the water, out on the beach or strolling through one of Osterville’s galleries and boutiques, the village has plenty to offer. From upscale shopping on Main Street to its sand and water, the location proves a great place for everything from paddle boarding and kayaking to relaxing.
While community events are often planned throughout the year, summer is an especially fun time to visit Osterville Village. Some of its waterfront estates date back to the 19th century and serve as second homes to homeowners during the summer season.
Its central location also makes it fairly easy to visit Hyannis or Martha’s Vineyard. As for Osterville itself, the village offers two private country clubs with golf courses, tennis and a private beach. A local yacht club additionally offers sailing programs for kids and grownups alike.
As one of the Town of Barnstable’s seven villages, Osterville sits on the south side of the Cape. The village looks out over Nantucket Sound, with beaches, ponds, bays and marshes to explore.
Dowses Beach is known for its soft sand and great shelling. It also includes both bay and ocean water and a family-friendly atmosphere. In contrast, residents-only Joshua Pond Beach sits on a freshwater pond. It’s a great place for swimming due to its calm water and sandy beach.
Of course, the seaside community is also full of history. Originally known by the name Cotacheset, the land later took the name Oysterville due to the popularity of oystering in the region. It’s believed a misspelling was what eventually led to the name of Osterville Village today.
