Nickerson State Park is a Family Favorite
From its campgrounds to its trails, its beaches to its freshwater ponds, Nickerson State Park is a true family favorite on the Cape. A destination for locals and for visitors, the state-owned park and recreation area sits in Brewster, named for a family that donated the land where the park now resides.
With more than 1,900 acres to explore, Nickerson State Park provides hundreds of campsites and cabins, plus miles of trails for mountain biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and hiking, some of which even link up with the Cape Cod Rail Trail. Many of the freshwater kettle ponds are stocked for fishing too, while area lakes are prime for boating, canoeing, swimming and other outdoor recreation.
In addition, you’ll also find a boat ramp here, along with a playground, restrooms and showers and even an amphitheater. Whether you enjoy a game of basketball, exploring one of the many trails, taking a dip in the water or one of the many planned educational programs within the property, there’s plenty for families to do and experience at Nickerson State Park.
As you plan your trip, keep in mind that camping at Nickerson State Park is only available from mid-April through mid-October. Be sure to bring all the gear you need, though you may find things like ice and certain necessities for sale at the park store.
Remember, though, there’s no alcohol allowed in the park and pets have to be on a leash at all times. No animals, except for service animals, however are allowed out on the beach during certain months of the year. In addition, Big Cliff Pond restricts boats of a certain size and the park doesn’t allow for off-road, motorized vehicles.
Whether camping, kayaking, hiking, fishing or biking, there’s plenty for those of all ages to do within the boundaries of this massive park.
