Flax Pond - Nickerson State Park

For plenty of family fun on Cape Cod, you won’t want to miss out on Nickerson State Park. A true favorite for those of all ages, the 1,900-acre park is filled with options ranging from boating and hiking to swimming in the freshwater kettle ponds.

The hardest part about going to the park, in fact, may be deciding what to do next. Filled with opportunities for outdoor recreation at every turn, you’ll also find plenty of room in the park for everything from biking and fishing to much, much more.

That’s because the park is filled with miles upon miles of trails leading around its ponds and through wooded areas, with mostly trout fishing at the eight freshwater ponds. For catch-and-release fishing head to Higgins Pond.

If biking is more your speed, though, it’s easy to get on the bike path, connecting up with the 22-mile long Cape Cod Rail Trail. The park is also, of course, the place for kayaking and canoeing, horseback riding and cross-country skiing during the cooler months of the year.

In addition, you’ll find a boat ramp at the park, along with an amphitheater, playground, restrooms and showers. As well, hundreds of campsites dot the area, with room for RVs, trailers and tents, as well as yurt rentals available, too. Campsites can even be booked in advance on-line for added convenience.

This state-owned recreation area sits in Brewster, formerly a private estate that was donated, forming the Commonwealth’s first state park. These days, though, it’s certainly a place for the public, where family fun sits at every turn.

When you go, remember the park charges a daily parking fee from Memorial weekend through the end of October. You can’t bring family pets on the beach and you can’t bring in alcohol, but you’ll surely want to make room for plenty of adventure at Nickerson State Park.
