If you’ve always wanted to learn to sail, you’ll find plenty of opportunity in Chatham. From sailing and rowing to organized racing, it’s all easily within reach within this Cape Cod community.

Chatham Yacht Club

The nonprofit Chatham Yacht Club has been the place to go for sailing lessons for nearly a century. The club offers instruction to kids and adults, plus organizes and promotes races in Pleasant Bay.

Sailing school is available to members, from beginners to those more advanced throughout the week. The club is run by volunteers and takes in donations to help maintain its affordable class and membership costs.

Stage Harbor Yacht Club

The Stage Harbor Yacht Club, in comparison, has been in operation for more than 70 years, teaching its students to sail on Stage Harbor. Classes meet in the mornings and afternoons, teaching kids everything from basic sailing terminology to new skills and knowledge. The club provides boats, or students may purchase their own.

Classes start at age six, with more specialized instruction and a race team for those up to 18 years old. Adult sailing is also available within the club.

Pleasant Bay Community Boating

Meanwhile, the nonprofit Pleasant Bay Community Boating primarily instructs kids, but also includes some adult lessons. Founded more than a decade ago, the program began as a way to offer sailing and rowing to those living in Chatham, Orleans, Harwich and Brewster.

The organization boasts affordable lessons and membership, arming participants with knowledge to experience the waterways of Cape Cod. All sailing lessons with Pleasant Bay Community Boating take place at its main location along Pleasant Bay.

The group also promotes classes for adults, starting with beginners to those who already hold more advanced skills. In addition, there are parent/child sailing lessons and opportunities for recreational sailing and racing.
