Great Island: Exclusivity in West Yarmouth

For exclusivity in West Yarmouth, there’s nothing quite like Great Island. Serving up an intimate environment for its residents, this stunning gated community sits on a more than 500-acre Cape Cod peninsula. Filled with miles of private beaches and natural beauty, the location is also extremely private.
Only three-dozen homes and a handful of cottages make up Great Island, some of which are priced in the multi-million dollar range. From Nantucket-style homes with stunning water views to private boat docks, you’ll find it all living on Great Island.
Homeowners here are treated to such desirable amenities as a beach club, tennis courts, a 10-hole golf course and a protected marina with deep-water docks. The island, however, is also home to several acres of common, undeveloped land, further adding to its appeal.
The exclusive community of today traces its roots back generations. Once the location of a secluded smallpox hospital, a lighthouse came to the island in the early 19th century. Long since deactivated, it still stands today at the very tip of the private island.
Eventually a wealthy landowner took over, constructing Great Island’s first summer home. Next came a game preserve, a private golf course and eventually an upscale country club turned hotel called Aberdeen Hall. When that sadly burned to the ground, Great Island reverted back to its more private beginnings.
Now renowned for its pricey homes and extreme privacy, Great Island has a reputation as being one of the Cape’s most exclusive areas. While it’s not easy for outsiders to visit, the area remains an ideal option for those searching for a coastal home with the added privacy of an island setting.
With abundant outdoor space, easy boating access and the luxury of quiet community beaches, Great Island presents an idealistic Cape Cod lifestyle in West Yarmouth.
