Enjoy the National Seashore
With plenty to see and experience, the summer season is the ideal time of year to enjoy the Cape Cod National Seashore. It’s the place of beaches, woods and ponds, with all of it stretching along Cape Cod’s eastern shore.
In fact, the Cape Cod National Seashore exists within the towns of Chatham, Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown. With that in mind, it’s no surprise then that the Cape Cod National Seashore includes around a half-dozen beaches.
This includes Herring Cove Beach and Race Point Beach in Provincetown, Head of the Meadow in Truro, Marconi Beach in Wellfleet, plus both Nauset Light Beach and Coast Guard Beach in Eastham. Despite some current limitations due to nesting piper plovers and some limited off-roading options, there’s still plenty of fun to experience at all of these locations.
Meanwhile, one place to gain an even better understanding of the area is the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham. The main visitor facility of the seashore, this is the place to find activity guides, maps, a museum and a bookstore.
It’s also the tipping off point for the popular Nauset Bicycle Trail, leading on to Coast Guard Beach, plus Buttonbush Trail and the Nauset Marsh Trail. It’s additionally a great place to view Nauset Marsh.
At the northern end of the seashore you’ll find the Province Lands Visitor Center. With an observation deck you can easily view 360-degrees of the ocean, the Outer Beach and the dunes. You’ll also find some exhibits on native animals and plants.
When you go, keep in mind that some beaches are accessible via tram, while others provide parking, yet need special parking stickers or are available for a daily vehicle fee. All of the seashore’s beaches provide space for changing rooms and restrooms, plus showers and lifeguards during the busy summer season.
