dome restaurant - woods hole

While Cape Cod is well known for its boating and its beaches, there’s also plenty of history. Some of that history is obvious, while some is a bit more discreet.

The Columns Restaurant

It’s pretty hard to miss the old Columns Restaurant in West Dennis. The stately white building sits right along Route 28, just as it has for around 150 years. Originally a sea captain’s home, the old home was later turned into a popular restaurant and club. It once brought in some of Cape Cod’s hottest jazz musicians.

While some renovations have been made in the decades since, the long-standing property is now owned by a Plymouth-based company interested in turning it into multi-unit housing.

the columns - dennis ma

The historic Columns mansion in Dennis may soon see new life. A Plymouth-based company purchased the old sea captain’s home last fall with plans to convert it into multi-unit housing.

The Greek Revival home commonly known as the “Columns” was originally built by a 19th century captain, and now sits along busy Route 28 in West Dennis. It’s been vacant for several decades.

The new owner plans to construct five rental units in the old building, then add another 12 two-bedroom condos in six nearby duplexes. Four of those units will be deed-restricted, affordable housing.

The latest timeline could push the start of construction to next spring. While the new construction portion of it could go fast, the restoration portion of the project could take

cape cod rail trail

If you’re looking for a great way to experience the best scenery on the Cape, one way to do it is to hop on the Cape Cod Rail Trail. Running from Yarmouth to Wellfleet, the trail follows an old railroad right-of-way.

At 25.5 miles long, the paved trail is relatively flat, well-marked, and is said to be a great experience for those of all ages and experience. Bicyclists, walkers, runners and even horseback riders can use the trail.

To understand the history of the Cape Cod Rail Trail, though, you need to step back in time. During the 1800s it was extremely difficult to reach Cape Cod. That began to change when railroad tracks connected up Boston to Provincetown, leading visitors from places like Boston, New York and Connecticut to the Cape.

bass river - cape cod real estate

Officially the town line between Yarmouth and Dennis, the Bass River is equally important to both communities. A popular spot for boating and fishing in central Cape Cod, the river provides plenty of fun for locals and visitors alike, from waterskiing and kayaking, to fishing and fun along the shore.

As the largest river on Cape Cod, the Bass River virtually divides the Cape in half, running from the areas of Follins and Mill ponds in the north to Nantucket Sound in the south. A center island called Marsh Island separates the river into Old Field Channel, which flows towards West Dennis, and the main channel, which passes by Windmill Beach, Ship Shops Marina, Bass River Yacht Club and Bass River Marina.

dennis port beach - dennis ma

From the beach to the theatre, local shops to outdoor recreation, you’ll find it all in and around Dennis Port. The tiny village on Nantucket Sound is a prime spot for tourists, but just as prized by those with roots in the area.

Route 28 is said to heavily influence some of those tourists, as a number of new shops have popped up along the roadway in recent years. That economic development could soon get another boost, thanks to a major road project.

maritime landing - dennis ma

Dennis Village could be in line for a new development of more than two-dozen homes. Plans for the proposed Maritime Landing development call for 28 new residences to go in just off Route 6A. Some of the residences would be duplexes while others would be stand-alone residences.

The nearly six-acre property sits on the south side of the roadway, behind some commercial properties. The site also sits conveniently within a short walk of village center.

Surrounding a large green space, it’s said that the homes will all feature two- to three-bedrooms, with around 1,400 to 1,800 square feet of living space. The homes would also include either side or front porches, a back patio, a full basement and a garage.

There have been some concerns raised by nearby

cape cod offroading

If you crave the adventure of off-roading on Cape Cod, you’ll find two options in Dennis. Both Crowes Pasture Beach and Chapin Memorial Beach allow for off-road, four-wheel drive vehicles, as long as you have a permit.

Chapin Beach provides a quiet location with miles upon miles of sandy beachfront. Along with its off-roading trails the location is also known for its shallow tidal pools.

Meanwhile, the other location is the remote Crowes Pasture Beach. One of the Cape’s most secluded spots for swimming, the beach is known for its smooth sand and natural beauty. While you can currently drive right out on the sand at Crowe’s Pasture, the site is also a great place to jump on one of the trails and walking paths that weave throughout the conservation area.
