Cape Cod’s Nature Place
Designed to help tell the story of the natural history of the region, the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History opens its doors for nearly year-round opportunities to explore area wildlife and ecosystems. Through education and conservation, Cape Cod’s Nature Place gives visitors the opportunity to learn more about the region.
Although small in size, the museum hosts a number of collections and exhibits, as well as some traveling exhibits for visitors to enjoy. In addition, the location commonly presents lectures, classes, workshops, walks and even field trips, all designed to help visitors learn more about Cape Cod’s natural environment.
Along with the museum itself, hundreds of acres of adjacent land is protected, offering visitors the opportunity to learn more about the land through things like outdoor classrooms. Nature trails lead through marsh and woodlands, creeks and tidal flats, giving people the opportunity to experience fish and wildlife in their native environment.
In addition, the summer brings daily guided field walks to the area. Meanwhile, the museum itself houses two floors of exhibits, including room for daily nature films and projects, while the Marshview Room presents sweeping views overlooking birds and the salt marsh. Temporary exhibits add to the collection of hundreds of preserved birds, an aquarium and a whale exhibit.
There are also monthly programs for visitors to enjoy, including archaeology and beginning bird watching, as well as activities designed especially for kids. In addition, there’s an outdoor butterfly house open during the summer season, giving visitors yet another way to connect with nature at the site.
If you’re planning on going, the museum is open on various days and times, but is closed on most national holidays. Visitors can also schedule group field guides to lead them out on the trails, plus there’s a museum gift shop for purchasing unique souvenirs to mark your visit.
