It’s something locals have known for years, but now the secret is out when it comes to one of the best cities to live in the entire nation. Niche.com just came out with its list of the “2024 Best Cities to Live in America”, and Cambridge sits close to the top.

The latest ranking puts Cambridge as number three on the list, with extremely high marks for its nightlife, its commute, its health and fitness, and for being a good place for families. The city’s overall Niche grade is an A+, helped also by earning an “A” grade for public schools and diversity.

Niche.com took into account everything from housing and public schools to jobs, the cost of living, diversity, and nightlife. For Cambridge, the lowest marks came in the categories of housing and the cost of living.

Around 117,000 people live in Cambridge, but the majority of people rent in Cambridge, where the median rent tops $2,600. That’s more than double the national median rent rate.

The median home value in Cambridge is around $997,000, which is more than three times the national median home value. Niche.com considered federally obtained data to come up with the list, then mixed in millions of actual reviews.

In other rankings, Niche.com placed Cambridge in the number one spot in terms of the “Best Cities for Young Professionals in America”. The city came in at number two in a ranking of the “Best Suburbs for Young Professionals in America”.

It probably doesn’t hurt that both Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are in Cambridge. Not only did Cambridge rank high, but so did some of its own neighborhoods.

Several Cambridge neighborhoods did extremely well when Niche ranked the “2024 Best Places to Live in Massachusetts”. That includes Cambridgeport, which took the number two spot behind Brookline.
