Considered one of the nation’s best cities for runners, Boston offers plenty of opportunities to lace up your running shoes. Whether in the park, on the sidewalk or off the beaten trail, the Greater Boston area enjoys some great running routes.
While you’ve likely heard of the Boston Marathon, it’s certainly not the only opportunity for runners. Whether you’re training for the next big race, or you just want to keep in shape, some of Boston’s best running routes also offers up some fantastic views.
If you want to experience scenery along the way, consider the one-and-a-half-mile loop around Chestnut Hill Reservoir. This route offers up views of the city skyline and Boston College.
Around the same length, some runners enjoy the loop around Jamaica Pond. Right on the border of Brookline, running is just one of the many outdoor activities you’ll find in the area.
At about two miles long, Somerville Community Path makes for an easy going run. The paved trail is flat, and a popular location for walkers and runners.
For a slightly longer run, you can always check out the more than two-mile loop around Franklin Park. You’ll be able to see some of the zoo and the golf course.
Even longer, a more than two-and-a-half-mile trail loops around Arnold Arboretum. This is a great place to see plants and check out city skyline views. It’s also less crowded than other locations in the city.
Another option is the Southwest Corridor Path. The running path starts in the Back Bay and leads to Forest Hills.
If you want a longer running route but don’t have a lot of time, consider hopping on the Skyline Trail at Middlesex Fells Reservoir. This is a challenging route because some of its uphill, plus it’s very rocky.
Long-distance runners can sometimes be seen out on the Esplanade. Lining the Charles River, this long stretch of greenway is a great place to build up your endurance.
