With its charming local shops, its welcoming vibe, and its waterfront views, it’s not hard to find things to like about living in Newburyport. Even if you’re already sold on the coastal town, here a few things to know about living there before you make the move.

Housing

Many of the Federal-style homes of Newburyport were constructed between the late 1700s to the early 1800s. Some other popular home styles you’ll still see include Georgian, Greek Revival and First Period. If you’re already home shopping, know that home prices have risen in recent years, thanks in part to the fact that the town has no more vacant land left to develop.

Shopping/Dining

Shoppers are sure to enjoy the many area retailers. There’s also Tannery Marketplace, which is an old mill building that now houses shops and eateries. In fact, there are around three dozen restaurants located throughout Newburyport for diners to choose from.

Historic sites

For historic sites, make time to head to the Custom House Maritime Museum, which details some famous shipwrecks, plus it has some model ships and information on the history of the Coast Guard. The Newburyport Harbour Light, which also goes by the name, Plum Island Light, originally dates back to the 1700s.

Outdoor attractions

Local outdoor attractions include the boardwalk of Waterfront Park, as well as Maudslay State Park, which includes meadows and gardens on the Merrimack River. Plum Island sits right off the coast of Newburyport. The barrier island is 11-miles long and a prime spot for swimming and fishing.

Location

Finally, it doesn’t hurt to mention that Newburyport is just 35 miles north of Boston. Its proximity to the ocean and to the Merrimack River is also to its advantage. While there are summer tourists that come to Newburyport
