nauset light eastham ma

One of the most famously photographed landmarks in Eastham is far more than just a great location for pictures and postcards.  Nauset Light, formally known as Nauset Beach Light and now belonging to the National Park Service, is one of the most interesting sites to explore in the Cape Cod region.  With its rich maritime history and unique features, this lighthouse may no longer be needed by modern ships, but it still serves an important role in Cape Cod’s cultural history.

Locals and visitors will have multiple opportunities to celebrate revered New England artist Edward Hopper over the coming months.  Hopper first came to the Cape with his wife in 1930 and spent many summers inspired by the views of Fisher Beach.  In fact, it was his wife who pushed Hopper to first paint in watercolor.  Throughout his career, Hopper went on to create more than 100 watercolors and oil interpretations of Cape Cod’s magnificent scenery.

Some of his most famous works include “Corn Hill”, “Gas”, “Cape Cod Sunset” and “Seven A.M.”.  However, it was a 1946 painting named “October on Cape Cod” that recently sold at auction for an outstanding $9.6 million.  Hopper’s paintings rarely included people, but rather some of the unique architecture

camp wellfleet

Camp Wellfleet - By Mr. Bean (Cape Cod National Seashore) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons

When you think of Cape Cod you probably think of the beaches and water, but the area is also known for its military history.  Camp Wellfleet was a former military training camp, opened in 1943 on land, which is now mostly owned by the National Park Service, and partially owned by the Town of Wellfleet.  Stretching for more than 1,700 acres along the Atlantic Ocean, this track of line can be traced back generations, to a time when the United States needed additional training ground for troops that would likely soon go off to war.

The camp played an active role in World War II.  In fact, it was at this location that the U.S. military began preparing for

fingers of west dennis

Designed with a boating lifestyle in mind, the Fingers of West Dennis is one of the premiere neighborhoods of Cape Cod.  The homes are uniquely constructed around eight parallel and man-made canals in West Dennis.  Not far from the mouth of the Bass River, these Weir Creek homes are located just to the north of West Dennis Beach, bordered by Surfside Road and Merchant Avenue.

Because a majority of the properties include a deep-water dock in their private backyards, this is truly a boating community.  While many of the properties are priced around the one million dollar mark, this exclusive neighborhood is also a prime location for getting around the West Dennis area.  The homes are not far by boat to the open waters of Nantucket Sound or to the nearby

orleans artist cottages

If you’re looking for something unique to do in Orleans this summer, be sure and check out the artist cottages.   In all this year there are eight cottages, all part of the Village Center Cultural District, as they celebrate the designs and originality of dozens of local artists.

The idea behind the cottages is to provide a fun and affordable place for visitors and local residents to shop, as well as for Cape Cod area artists to sell their artwork.  All of the artwork for sale is handmade and original, and has to be approved before being sold on the grounds.

Artists can lease the space either by week or by month, meaning each time you go you may find completely new and unique artwork for sale to add to your own personal collection, or pick up as a

While Cape Cod has some fantastic restaurants, perhaps one particular item on the menu is the most widely sought after of all.  The Wellfleet Oyster is quite simply exceptional in taste, thanks to the pristine location and nutrient-rich waters of which it is found.  The opportunity also only presents itself during certain times of the year, specifically September-July.

The Wellfleet Oyster appropriately comes from the estuaries of Wellfleet Harbor.  With cold coast waters originally from Canada and northern Maine coming into the bay, the unique location helps the oyster grow much sweeter than other types of oysters on the market.

Twice a day, the bottom-cultured oyster is exposed to the beach by the tide, also giving the oyster meat a more firm
