Bay Village Real Estate

Encompassing just six blocks, Bay Village is the smallest of Boston’s neighborhoods and one of Boston’s best kept secrets. Located south of the Public Garden, Bay Village is an enclave of historic and architecturally significant homes. The red brick Federal period houses on Fayette and Melrose Streets project a stately charm accented with gas street lamps and the occasional “pocket garden.” A short stretch of Victorian properties and additional Art Deco details on several homes further distinguish this tight knit community. With approximately 1000 residents, Bay Village is home to a mix of young families, couples, and working professionals. With easy access to the Theatre District and Back Bay, Bay Village offers convenience, parking, and a respite from the bustle of more trafficked neighborhoods.  Read more about Bay Village real estate.

More About Bay Village Real Estate

Bay Village Location

Bay Village is wedged between the South End; Back Bay; and the Theatre District. Nearby MBTA stations include Arlington and Boylston on the Green Line and Back Bay and Tufts Medical Center on the Orange Lines. Bay Village is conveniently located near the Mass Pike (I-90) as well as I-93 to points south.

Bay Village History

Similar to other Boston neighborhoods, Bay Village was originally a landfill project and was raised 18 feet in the 1860s to avoid flooding. Bay Village architecture is often compared to the mansions lining Beacon Hill and the similarity is deliberate. Many of the carpenters and craftsmen who built the grand houses on Beacon Hill settled in Bay Village, building smaller, simpler versions of the mansions for themselves. These homes share virtually the same layouts and even exterior facades but lack some of Beacon Hill’s pricier details. The name “Bay Village” stems from the area’s watery origins as well as one of its signature streets, Bay Street, located off Fayette.
